I am not citing this as a major problem, as I think it is unavoidable, but it is something to bear in mind if you are contemplating tackling the whole series yourself. The problem is that this creates a road bump whenever you have an entire novel dedicated to one of these legions. Not every legion is going to hit the spot for every reader.

However, others… Going through pages and pages of the Iron Hands and Salamanders, I found myself thinking more than once ‘I just don’t care!’ (though, funnily enough, I did quite like Vulkan as a character it is his sons that failed to grab me). The Ultramarines and Blood Angels would also score highly as while I do not have a particular affinity for either legion, I found most of their stories interesting and driving the overall arc of the series. For my part, I tended to like stories based around the Thousand Sons, Space Wolves (when the story was not getting too self-indulgent), and the Dark Angels (obviously). Some people will obviously gravitate to one legion or another, and be less interested in the rest. However, my focus is really on the series as a whole. I am not going to call any specific author out (partly because they are all good Warhammer writers, and partly because I know some of these guys), but I will cite some specific books here and there. Unusually for fiction, I find I have a few things to say about these books. You don't need to know every scrap of lore from previous books to make sense of each novel, but they are all somewhat interconnected.Fifty-four books, and a smattering of related short stories… and I have finally finished the long-running Horus Heresy series. Master of Mankind probably benefits from reading A Thousand Sons first in some ways. Wolfsbane requires reading Prospero Burns, A Thousand Sons and the novella Wolf King. Master Of Mankind is just essential to the setting and the series in every way, and Wolfsbane is my new favourite.

Those are pretty much free standing arcs in their own right, although Scars definitely benefits from having read A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns. These books bring the White Scars arc from the start of the Heresy up to just before the Siege. There's another great arc in Scars and Path of Heaven. It's basically the Word Bearers arc up to a certain point, covering their fall to Chaos, attack on Calth and the Shadow Crusade although Betrayer also focuses heavily on Angron, Khârn and the World Eaters. The first is The First Heretic, Know No Fear, Betrayer. I ignored the two Ultramarine-Word Bearer novels that came as tie ins to Betrayal at Calth (are they considered part of the series?) and I ignored Furious Abyss- I feel I've missed little important there based on the plot summaries I've read.īeyond the first five books I'd mention two arcs. I'll just say I wish I didn't read Old Earth. I've basically ignored all of Nick Kymes Salamanders novels because I don't much like what I've read of his writing, but I read Old Earth because I thought it might be necessary for adding context to future events in the Siege of Terra. Even so, a brief google will probably clue you in about them when we get to those final books. I was going to say The Outcast Dead can be skipped but it looks like a few characters from it might continue to pop up later during the Siege. Tallarn can probably be skipped without missing out on too much. But a lot of them are actually very good and worth reading. Most of the short stories in the compilations add depth to the overall story arc and fill in a few minor gaps, but nothing you can't catch up on yourself, with one exception that would unfortunately be too much of a spoiler to disclose. I didn't think it was very good, and it is pretty much irrelevant to the wider plot. naff):Įdit bollocks someone already listed a separate guide. Pass (compilation/short story based and/or filler books or just kinda. Must Read (because either story and/or awesome):ġ (book number in the series) - Horus RisingĢ3 - Angel Exterminatus (you could skip this but don't, its a super good read and you will come out of it actually admiring perty)Ĥ2 - Garro (not too important to the story but its Garro, must read just for him tbh, by the time you finish Flight of the Eisenstein you will love him)Ĥ4 - The Crimson King (book was kinda meh personally but you need to read it to connect the dots for the Thousand Sons and how they turned traitor)Ĭan/maybe should read (not that amazing and/or add to the series in a meaningful way): Books to read Bear in mind this is my personal opinion, people may disagree about certain books and how much they like/dislike and how important they are for them and the story but for the most part i feel this list is legit and hope it helps, i would also read them in order of the book number.
